The Insurance System In The Us – New Immigrants Need To Know

When new to the U.s., one of the most important things that immigrants need to understand is insurance system. American famous medical expenses and living very high. The article below to help you understand the type of insurance popular in the Us with the estimated cost, especially useful for new immigrants.

1. Health Insurance (Health Insurance)

Employer-Sponsored Insurance (ESI)

  • This is the type of insurance company, pay the cost, the workers only from 15% – 30%.
  • Estimated cost:
    • Individual: $150 – $300/month
    • Family: $400 – $900/month
  • Free examination: usually $20 – $50/times.

Marketplace (Obamacare)

  • For those who purchase insurance, no insurance from the company.
  • If a low income can be government premium support.
  • Cost before subsidy:
    • Individual: $350 – $700/month
    • Family: $800 – $1.600/month
  • The deductible (deductible): $2.000 – $7,500 per year.
  • If eligible for support, the charge level can only be a few tens of DOLLARS per month.

Medicaid

  • Program for low-income people.
  • Cost: almost free or very low.
  • However, new immigrants in many states have to have a green card minimum 5 new year eligible (except some states such as California, New York, have separate policies to support immigrant sooner).

Medicare

  • Medicare program is the health insurance of the government, for:
    • Citizen or permanent resident (green card holder) from age 65 and above.
    • Persons under the age of 65 but disabled eligible (receive subsidies SSDI on 24 January).
  • Conditions immigrants are participating Medicare:
    • Must be a permanent resident for a minimum of 5 continuous years in the united states.
    • In many cases, if not enough years of work (40 quarters = 10 years of Medicare tax), the immigrant have to buy Part A (insurance, hospitalization) with the fee can be up to $505/month (year 2025).
    • Part B (coverage clinics) have standard rates are $174,70/month (year 2025).
  • So, new immigrants are generally not eligible to receive Medicare for free, unless they live long and taxes in the Us enough time.

2. Car Insurance (Auto Insurance)

  • Almost mandatory in all states, if you own or drive a car.
  • The free oscillator strength depending on state, age, type of car, driving history and credit score.
  • Liability only (compulsory insurance): $50 – $120/month.
  • Full coverage (comprehensive insurance): $150 – $400/month.

New immigrants often have to pay higher due to no driving history or credit in America.

3. Home-Insurance (Homeowners/Renters Insurance)

  • Homeowners Insurance: compulsory if you buy the house in the form of mortgage loans. Cost: $100 – $200/month (depending on the value of the house).
  • Renters Insurance: Recommended for tenants to protect personal property and civil liability. Cost: $10 – $30/month.

Tips For New Immigrants

  • Should purchase health insurance when coming to America because medical costs are extremely expensive.
  • Learn skills insurance law in the state I live in, because the rules are different in each place.
  • Ask the company (if you work) on insurance benefits to not spend the cost of buying outside.
  • Compare prices from multiple insurers, because the cost difference is very big.

Psychological preparation and financial, as the total cost for basic coverage can be from $300 – $1.200/month or more, depending on family circumstances and where you live.
